Building on a career in product management, sales and marketing for technology companies, Mark Wrigley returned to his hometown of Sheffield to set up his own company. He is an accomplished communicator and his company, Elektric-Tube, specialises in the communication of science and technology to all. The company has a successful track record in crowd funding and sales by social media.
Institute of Physics (IOP)
Trustee & Yorkshire Committee Chair 2012 to Date
As a trustee, performs governance of the Institute and advises on management of the organisation’s resources including investments, buildings and human resources.
Is Yorkshire Committee’s Chair and ‘Outreach and Engagement Champion’ organising and managing IOP events such as Otley Science Fair, Pint of Science, Hillsfest, Star Gazing Live (York), and Hands on Science and Technology Day (Stocksbridge).
Elektric-Tube – Founder 2011 to Date
Established as a consultancy specialising in light technology, Alternative-Photonics successfully bid and delivered the 2014 Festival of the Mind ‘Disruptive Technology Astronomy’ project using 3D printed components and a Raspberry Pi camera to construct a telescope. It was described as “one of the two showcase projects of the festival” by the University of Sheffield.
Exploiting the subsequent national press coverage and social media, Alternative-Photonics have now successfully crowd funded the project as a home construction kit and established an on line shop shipping products internationally.
Lazy-Photon Photography – Founder 2005 to Date
In close collaboration with Cupola Gallery in Hillsborough, Lazy-Photon offers digital photography training courses exploring both the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography. Lazy-Photon also offers digital photographic services such as Cupola’s ‘Prints on Demand’.
Product Manager – Snell and Wilcox 2006 – 2009
Managed a line of television infrastructure and software control products, focusing on time to market and profitability, while at the same time collating customer requirements and communication product benefits. Streamlined the product management process by introducing roadmap roadmaps.
Product Manager – Motorola 1998 – 2005
Managed the specification, development and delivery of new products for mobile phone infrastructure from product inception, through development to product release to eventual retirement. Controlled all financial aspects including profitability and cash flow. Products were both software and hardware system components with a maximum development budget of US$35 million.
International Assignments – Ericson Radio AB 1993 – 1998
Beijing – Project Manager / Sales Manager
Recruited as a Project Manager for the installation of mobile phone systems in main land China. Was quickly promoted to sales and marketing where, with a team of local employees, established sales of US$ 100 million in a single year for mobile phone networks to Chinese operating authorities.
USA – Account Manager
Consolidated accounts receivable issues (unpaid invoices) between project teams, finance and the customers. Using a ‘cradle-to-grave’ method was able to track and identify US$12M of unrecognised revenue.
Tokyo – Marketing Manager
Coordinated the market introduction of new mobile telephone infrastructure products across six operating companies.
